The High Desert Education Service District (HDESD) teamed up with Oregon Adaptive Sports (OAS) and Mt. Bachelor to bring the excitement of skiing to students with visual impairments. With additional funding support from Thomason Auto Group, students had the opportunity to experience the slopes at Mt. Bachelor. “These ski days allow our students with visual impairments to step beyond the classroom and engage in meaningful, hands-on experiences,” said Brenda Krueger, teacher of the visually impaired at HDESD. “Skiing is more than just a recreational activity—it fosters physical coordination, confidence and social connection.”
HDESD provides a range of specialized services for students from birth to age 21 who experience visual impairment. These services, offered by trained educators with expertise in vision-related instruction, include assessment, individualized education, and hands-on learning experiences.
Outdoor adventures for all
According to Pat Addabbo, Executive Director of Oregon Adaptive Sports, recreation plays a key role in mental and physical well-being. “Outdoor activities like skiing create joy, strengthen social bonds and promote physical fitness. Adaptive programs ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy these transformative experiences.” However, these activities often require additional resources to ensure accessibility and safety. OAS provides the specialized equipment, training and guidance needed to make skiing possible for individuals with disabilities. Mt. Bachelor has partnered with OAS to provide adaptive skiing opportunities for individuals with disabilities for over two decades.
About Oregon Adaptive Sports (OAS)
OAS was founded to break down barriers for students with disabilities who previously watched from the lodge as their peers took to the slopes. Today, OAS serves more than 100 youth and young adults with disabilities annually through its Ski For Life program, working with regional schools including Bend-La Pine School District, Redmond, and Sisters. The program is made possible through community donations and grant support.
