About the Safe School Alliance (SSA)

The Safe School Alliance (SSA) is a network of school districts and agencies that meet on a monthly basis to share information, discuss items of common interests and concern, and advise member agencies on the adoption of policy and procedures.

The purpose of this network is to increase the ability of all organizations to work consistently and in collaboration to assure safe and secure schools for the children of the Crook and Deschutes Counties.

The SSA does not decide policy, but rather serves in an advisory capacity to partner organizations, recommending policy and procedures that are consistent throughout the region. All partner SSA members operate in accordance with applicable statutes, policies and procedures of their individual districts or agencies. The SSA works on a consensus basis, sharing information and perspectives to increase knowledge, communication and ability of all partners in creating safe school environments and preventing violence.

Previous to the 2007/08 school year, the facilitation of the SSA was shared by various school districts and agencies. To ensure validity, vitality, and consistency within the SSA, the High Desert Education Service District hired Peter M. Miller, recently retired district office administrator from the Bend – La Pine Schools and long time member of the SSA as a building administrator and district representative to the SSA, as the facilitator.

Mr. Miller prepares the agendas, communicates meeting times, dates, and locations, facilitates meetings, sends out minutes, acts as spokesperson as needed, and attends to other matters for the SSA during the school year.

The SSA meets the 3rd Thursday of the month from September through June, 8:00 – 9:30 AM at the HDESD Redmond administrative offices.
