About EI/ECSE

Assessment & Evaluation

A High Desert Education Service District Evaluation Team is available to provide screenings and evaluations free of charge for children birth to 5 years who have special needs or disabilities.  Evaluations include an observation of the child in a comfortable setting, in-depth interviews with family members and a standardized assessment of a child's development areas of concern.  A written report, including planning suggestions, is prepared and shared with families.

When possible, evaluations are conducted in the family's home community. Current evaluation sites are located in Bend (Alyce Hatch Center), Redmond (The Manzanita Building), Prineville (Prineville Education Center), and Madras (Jefferson Education Service District).

Referral

Any child age birth to 5 who may have developmental delays can be referred to the Evaluation Team.  Areas of concern may include cognitive development, speech and language, fine and gross motor, social-emotional, behavior, adaptive (self-help), vision, or hearing. For more information, see our brief developmental checklists:

Referrals may come from anyone. The most common referrals come from parents, preschool teachers, physicians, and other public agencies. Although only a parent can begin the process of determining a child's eligibility, anyone can bring express concerns about a child's development.
